Colorado & our Gray Light velvet buck
Posted: September 12th, 2009, 11:49 amWell.... We are finally home and I must say that I am not too happy about it 
I love Colorado... Enough to move NOW!!! We hunted hard for nine days... Numerous stalks on bucks that acted more like sheep than deer. Most were cliffed out and in areas that were more accessible to mountain climbers than bow hunters!!!
I had been after a buck that was most certainly B&C and missed him once at 65 yards severe downhill for which I aimed for 50 and missed him just low a hair and I mean a hair!!! I was a little bummed I had hunted so hard to miss but thankful there was not a wounded buck on the mountain!
I continued to pursue him but as most big bucks do after a close call... He vanished. The deer were certainly beginning to shed their velvet early this year and with some already sporting red heads, I was really wanting to connect before they disappeared into the timber below making them much more difficult to spot and stalk!
I had been after a group of 12 bucks that had three shooters in it, one of which was a great 170-180 class typical which I ended up shooting after a 3 hour stalk up vertical shale and cliffed out rim rock... I was stalking up a cliff face for 200 yards that was 60 degrees and sketchy as anything I had ever done! I really never thought I would go through such treacherous territory to take aim at a good buck!
He was bedded and I shot him at 29 yards... The best part about it was that it was all caught on film and it is a great kill shot! He net green scores at 175 and grosses 180. He is 25" wide and is my best archery deer to date! I am excited to say the least... I want to thank my good friend Grant for hosting our stay and sharing great times together... We chased elk the last few days with him and got into them a few times really good... The bugles sent shivers down my spine and it is darned cool to be in the middle on them. Hopefully he connects on a good one here in the next few weeks and can share him with everyone here! Thank you Chad for the friendship and great hunts... I had a blast chasing these bucks with you, Micah for filming and Andy.... You are a RIOT!!! Congrats on your first high country muley... He is a stud and talk about mass and palmation... Post him up for us if you can muster a moment
This hunt was by far one of the most challenging and one of the most rewarding as hard work can pay off and I am so stoked to have such a great wife, great friends and great game to chase with my bow, I hope you all enjoy the pictures and I will post more once I get back from the tournaments...
P.s. Morland... When you read this... Always remember that saddle you stood in skylined... I will carry that hilarious memory with me forever bro... Thanks for the comraderie and friendship
